Healing Voices – Personal Stories’ Board Member Regina Ress forwarded an interesting blog to me written by Shereen Reda, Prevention Program Coordinator at the Sexual Violence Center of the Twin Cities, Minnesota. It focused on the financial cost of sexual assualt. Reda points out that “everyone pays the price for sexual assualt.” The blog sites statistics related to the costs in the state of Minnesota which amounts to approximately $1,540 for all Minnesota residents.
The blog goes on to discuss the costs that fall to the victim alone such as lost wages, cost on family/relationships, re-victimization and costs related to personal and community protection.
We don’t often think about this side of abuse/assualt. If you are interested in see learning more about this, check out the full study done in 2007. It can be found on the Minnesota Department of Health’s website.
