WESST Provides Help for Our New Organization

WESST’s Santa Fe Office Has Great Workshops and Consulting

As a new startup non-profit I am excited to have discovered WESST, a statewide small business development and training organization with the mission of growing New Mexico’s economy by cultivating entrepreneurship, especially among women, minorities, and people of low income. WESST has six regional offices in New Mexiso.  Healing Voices – Personal Stories is pleased to be a client of WESST having attended a workshop on Search Engine Optimization and planning to use their consulting services.

The Santa Fe office is headed by Bette Bradbury with Office Administrator/Trainer Roseanna Perea. We met for an introductory session where I received many excellent ideas on how to get word out about our new nonprofit to the communities in New Mexico.

I am impressed with WESST’s range of clients, and the workshops that they offer.  A Press Release on December 10th particularly peaked my interest.  The headline read, “WESST Client Wins 2010 TeenNick Halo Award.”  It’s about Lauren Huichan, currently a freshman at The University of New Mexico who was able to turn her life around. She was recognized for her accomplishments with the Halo Award which includes a $10,000 scholarship, a $10,000 donation to a charity of her choice as well as being matched with a celebrity at the award’s ceremony.  Huichan was paired with Mariah Carey since they both share a passion for helping kids.  Huichan has come a long way from the 12 year old who was removed from an abusive household and put into the foster care system.  For the next three years she was on a path of self destruction until she turned her life around by attending Abuquerque’s Creative Education Preparatory Institute. There she participated in WESST’s Youth Financial Literacy Program and started saving for her education with an Individual Development Account that is matched by WESST.

Networking is so important for a new organization like Healing Voices – Personal Stories and WESST provides us excellent opportunities to expand our contacts, attend on-target workshops and receive consulting services within our budget.
